One of the biggest issues I have encountered in my years of teaching and coaching ESL is that students rely too heavily on the teacher or coach to achieve fluency. This method can be quite costly, as the student does little or no work on their own, but rather waits for the guided sessions to make any progress. My approach is to offer guidance and accountability as you move forward in your English journey predominantly on your own. We have conversation, practice reading aloud, discuss any feelings or fears you have with respect to conversing or writing in English, and finally, practice any pronunciation exercises that come up during class. From there, you can expect to receive an email with the next steps that you should take on your own towards fluency. We schedule the next class at your convenience with the understanding that you will have worked on the specific topics discussed during the class, and the process continues from there!
